NMJC's Preston Burr earned the 2017 CNFR Championship in the Saddle Bronc riding event this past Saturday evening in the championship round. Burr made a total of four seperate rides beginning on Monday the 12th and finishing Saturday the 17th in Casper, Wyoming. Preston has posted a tremendous season for NMJC during the 2016-17 campaign and entered the finals ranked 9th nationally and 2nd in the SWR / NIRA in saddle bronc.
Teammates Wyatt Hayes and Tyce McLeod represented NMJC in the team roping event and earned a 13th place finish, among all other national two-year and four-year colleges and universities. These two events placed NMJC as 10th overall in the team standings.
Three, two-year colleges were among the top 10 rodeo colleges/universities while the other 7 teams were among major college rodeo universities. Below are the final numbers for Burr and the NMJC Team finish:
Preston Burr Rd #1 78.5; #2 60; #3 72; Championship Round 74 = 284.5 on 4 rides.
(Team Roping) Hayes / McLeod Rd #1 NS; #2 5.8; #3 7.6 = 13.4 for the event.
Team Finish #10 with 325. Hill College, Eastern Mississippi CC were the only other two-year colleges that finished in the top 10 Nationally.
The 2017 Team finish will rank as the highest finish for Head Coach Marty Eakin who finishes his 3rd season as the T-Birds head coach.
