The NMJC men's golf team opened their 2016 fall campaign yesterday at the Samuel Proal Wolfpack Invitational in Pueblo, Colorado. The tournament is hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo, and Walking Stick Golf Course.
The Tbirds shot an opening round 297 (+9) team total, which was good for 4th place overall. The Thunderbirds were led by Freshman Ryan Cox, who opened his college golf career with a smooth (73). Following close behind were sophomores Fraser Hughes (74), Ben Tucker (74), Michael Garcia (76) and Peter Johns (81). The Tbirds trailed host CSU-Pueblo by 5 shots after the opening 18 holes.
The Thunderbirds rallied during the afternoon round, shooting a tournament low 286 (-2) team total. The Tbirds were led by Ben Tucker who fired a beautiful (-3) 69, which was the low round of the day. Ryan Cox and Fraser Hughes both shot (-1) 71's, while Peter Johns added a (+3) 75, and Michael Garcia shot (+6) 78. The Tbirds jumped into 2nd place overall, 4 shots back of CSU-Pueblo.
The Thunderbirds have 3 players in the top 10 individually. Ben Tucker is tied for 4th, Ryan Cox tied for 6th and Fraser Hughes in a tie for 8th. Play resumes today at 8:30am from Walking Stick Golf course.
