The NMJC men's golf team won their first team title of the season this past weekend at the Dr. Pepper Classic in Waco, TX. The 9 team field included #5 Hutchinson CC and host Mclennan college (last season's national champions). This adds to an already successful fall campaign for the Tbirds, who have one 2nd place finish, and two 3rd place finshes thus far. Third year coach James Berry likes where his team is heading into the fall break, "there's no doubt the boys are trending in the right direction. Getting a team victory was one of our goals, so we're happy we can cross that off. I'm very happy for Luke (Turbutt) getting his first individual title, and Ben's (Tucker) been great all fall. We're motivated to keep working hard to maintain this momentum heading into the fall break".
The Tbirds cruised to a 12 shot victory behind tournament medalist Luke Turbutt, and second place finisher Ben Tucker. For Turbutt (freshman), this was his first individual win in collegiate play. Turbutt was tied for the lead after 18 holes following a 2-under par 70. He followed that up with an even par 72, good for a 3 shot victory over fellow Thunderbird Ben Tucker (sophomore). Ben Tucker opened with a 3-over par 75, followed by a smooth 2-under par 70 to close out the tournament. For Tucker, this was his 3rd top ten finsish in 5 events for the Thunderbirds.
Sophomore Fraser Hughes continued his solid play this fall finishing tied for 11th place overall (77, 75). For Hughes, this was his third finish within the top 11. Freshman Ryan Cox (77, 81) and sophomore Peter Johns (78, 80) both finished tied for 30th in the 63 player field.
The Thunderbirds conclude their fall season next week at the Odessa College Invitational in Odessa, TX. (11/2-11/4).
