The NMJC T-Bird Men's basektball team traveled to North Dallas over the weekend to kickoff the scrimmage portion of the 2017-18 season. The played in 5 scrimmages vs Southwest Mississippi College, Kilgore College, San Jacinto College, Garden City CC, KS and Lee College from Baytown, TX. The competition was intense all weekend and the talent level was on high alert. The scrimmage was organized by the Mullen-Mitchell Jamboree and involved over 60 schools with over 300 NCAA recruiters on site for the event.
NMJC entered the contest with on 3 returners from the 2016-17 team and this "warm-up" period of the season will be crtitical for team development. The opening contest vs SW Mississippi College was a battle all the way. NMJC trailed by 10 at half but managed a strong come back with some sharp shooting and timely rebounds to win the scrimmage 62-61!
Game 2 was played late on Friday evening seeing NMCJ battle Kilgore College of Texas. Both teams sputtered early, but got on track in the second half with Kilgore surging ahead in the final few minutes to take the victory 39-33.
The remaining three contest were played on Saturday morning and afternoon. NMJC battled Garden City College of Kansas, San Jacinto College of Texas and Lee College. The men won one of the three scrimmages that were played with a running clock and only one timeout allowed for each team.
Coach Brian Lohrey considered the weekend to be a success for the team as chemistry and competition were established among the ranks. The team will benefit from all the competitions scheduled during October. This weekend the team travels to Colorado to continue the pre-season.
