Cave, Simon lead No. 19 NMJC past Trinidad, 9-3
T-Birds even record at 5-5 on the season
HOBBS, N.M. — The No. 19 New Mexico Junior College baseball team got a 4-for-4 performance by Jacy Cave and seven shutout innings from Texas Tech signee Mark Simon in a 9-3 win over Trinidad State Junior College on Friday at Ray Birmingham Thunderbird Field.
Cave, a Farmington native, got the NMJC offense started in the second inning when he tripled and eventually scored the first run of the game on an RBI single from Austin Botello.
The Thunderbirds (5-5) got two more runs in the inning on a JP Rousseau two-run double to make it 3-0. NMJC added two more runs in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to build a 9-0 lead before Trinidad State scored three in the eighth.
Cave added three RBI, two runs and a stolen base to his four-hit performance. Botello went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base while Branden Greiger was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run.
The offense was more than enough for Simon as he went seven scoreless innings and surrendered four hits while striking out seven and walking two – throwing just 83 pitches in the outing.
NMJC's Sam Swindle tossed a scoreless final 1 2/3 innings and didn't give up a hit.
The two teams play a doubleheader today starting at 11 a.m. in Hobbs.
