No. 19 T-Birds complete sweep of Trinidad State
NMJC moves to 8-5 on the season
HOBBS, N.M. — The 19th-ranked NMJC baseball team completed its four-game sweep of Trinidad State Junior College this weekend with a pair of wins Saturday and another victory Sunday at Ray Birmingham Thunderbird Field.
On Saturday, the T-Birds (8-5) defeated Trinidad 18-4 in game one and won game two 3-1 thanks to a combined no-hitter from Fernando Fernandez-Beltran and Brett Worthen.
In the second game Fernandez-Beltran went the first 5 2/3 innings and gave up a run on no hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Worthen entered in the sixth to get the T-Birds out of a jam and tossed a perfect 1 1/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts to get his fourth save of the season.
Travon Benton paced NMJC at the plate in game two Saturday, going 2-for-2 with a triple, RBI and run.
In the first game Saturday, a 10-run third inning paced by a pair of home runs by Jacy Cave helped the T-Birds run rule Trinidad 18-4 in five innings.
Cave finished 2-for-3 in the game with four RBI for NMJC.
Daniel Herrera and Jeff Deimling each with 3-for-3 for NMJC with Herrera hitting a double and triple to go along with three runs and an RBI while Deimling added two RBI and two runs. Luis Pintor was 2-for-2 with a home run while Zak Felix was 1-for-1 with three RBI.
Jean-Francois Dionne got the win, going five innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
The T-Birds closed out the sweep with a 10-0 run-rule victory in seven innings on Sunday.
Colby Price picked up the win, going five innings and giving up just one hit while striking out six and walking three. Trenton Rousseau pitched the final two innings and surrendered just one hit as well with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.
Cave again paced NMJC at the plate as the Farmington native blasted two more home runs while going 3-for-4 on the day with four RBI.
Angel Vega went 4-for-5 for the T-Birds with two RBI and a pair of doubles while JP Rousseau was 2-for-4, Pintor was 2-for-4 and Benton went 1-for-2 with a home run.
NMJC returns to action Friday at a tournament in Weatherford, Texas.
