Baseball goes 1-3 at Tournament of Champions
Houston, TEXAS
The New Mexico Junior College Baseball team started their season at the Tournament of Champions in Houston, Texas playing four games over three days and finishing the tournament 1-3.
In the opening game, NMJC defeated Blinn Community College picking up a 10-7 win. Sophomore right hander Blake Walden picked up the win giving up five runs on seven hits and striking out five in five innings of work. Freshman hurler Alex Pinedo came on in the sixth inning and worked two innings giving up two runs and striking out four. Brian Archibald toed the runner in the top of the ninth and struck out two to preserve the win for Walden and pick up his first save on his career.
Freshman Eddy Vasquez led the charge at the plate going 3-for-3 with one RBI, two runs and one stolen base in his debut. Luis Pintor added three RBI.
The remaining three games of the tournament weren't as kind to the Thunderbirds as they fell 7-5 to Alvin Community College and were run ruled by Baton Rouge Community College 11-3.
On Sunday, the Thunderbirds played Navarro Community College and fell 5-4.
The Thunderbirds return home to host the Lamar Community College Lopes in a four game set on Friday and Saturday, February 12-13. First pitch of the double header both days will be 11:00 A.M.
