Travon Benton did all he could to give the Thunderbirds a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Cisco College, as the Thunderbirds dropped their opening game of the Region V Tournament, 9-4 on Friday.
Benton racked up three RBIs on two hits. He singled in the first, which tied the game at one and fifth which brought the Tbirds to within two at 6-4.
Cisco hurler, Jeb Bargfeldt picked up the win by keeping the powerful Thunderbirds offense at bay. He allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings. He struck out nine Thunderbirds while allowing only one walk.
NMJC sophomore standout, Blake Walden was handed his first loss of the season as he allowed seven runs in five innings. He struckout six Wranglers and walked four.
Cisco did their best Thundebrids impression as they hit three home runs on the day.
The top of the first saw Cisco College take an early lead, 1-0. Cisco had a lead off single and a few pitches later, another soft cisco single moved the runner from from first to second. A few plays later, Cisco stole home on a throw down to second to get the runner trying to steal.
The Thunderbirds survived Cisco College's surge and put up one run of its own in the first. NMJC Thunderbirds scored on an RBI single by Benton.
The lead stayed with The Wranglers after the fourth, when it scored four runs on a three-run home run and an RBI single.
Cisco posted one run in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth. In the fifth, Cisc scored on a solo home run.
After pushing across three runs in the bottom of the fifth, NMJC faced just a 6-4 deficit. A sacrifice fly by Angel De Jesus and a two-run single by Benton triggered a Thunderbirds comeback. The Thunderbirds threat came to an end when Bargfeldt finally got Jeff Deimling to strike out.
NMJC will face McLennan College who dropped a 5-4 decision to NMMI. Game time has been pushed back to 3:00 PM MST because of the storm that moved through Lubbock yesterday.
