Thunderbirds Win Home Invitational
Ryan Cox Takes Medalist Honors
The NMJC men's golf team won their home invitational for the 2nd straight year at Rockwind Community Links this past weekend. The weather played a major factor as winds topped 40mph and temperatures Monday morning dropped below 45°. The Thunderbirds won by 20 shots over runner-up Mclennan Community College. Leading NMJC was sophomore Ryan Cox who won the tournament individually by 8 strokes. Cox fired rounds of 67 (-5), 71 (-1) in cold, windy conditions. This is the first individual win of the season for Cox, who has 6 top 5 finishes in 7 events.
Freshman Andrew Ni continued his solid play finishing alone in 4th place with rounds of 74 (+2), 77 (+5). This was Ni's 2nd top 5 finish this season for the Tbirds. Freshman Tyler Cox finished alone in 5th place individually with rounds of 78 (+6), 74 (+2), marking the first top 5 finish of Cox's career.
Freshman Zhane Chan finished 7th place overall with rounds of 78 (+6), 76 (+4) while Freshman Harvey Hill finished tied for 10th with rounds of 81 (+9), 75 (+3). Also contributing for the Thunderbirds were Freshman Julius Kreutzer and Sophomore Preston Ewing who tied for 12th place overall. Kreutzer fired rounds of 77 (+5), 80 (+8) while Ewing carded rounds of 80 (+8), 77 (+5).
Head coach James Berry - "I thought the team handled the weather very well, those were two challenging days to play in. Severe wind requires a different skill set, both physical and mental. I'm happy for Ryan, he performed very well and really led the team this week. Getting this win over good competition gives us confidence heading into the District Championship in a couple weeks."
The Tbirds are back in action April 16th and 17th for the NJCAA District 2 Championship.
