T-Birds fourth, Lady T-Birds fifth at Western Texas Rodeo
Woods, Burnett take first in Snyder, Texas, event
SNYDER, Texas — The New Mexico Junior College men's rodeo team finished in fourth thanks to a pair of first-place finishes while the NMJC women finished in fifth at the Western Texas College Rodeo on Saturday.
NMJC sophomore Linden Woods took first place in bareback riding, taking first in the long go with a 76 and eighth in the short go with a 70-point ride to finish with 146 points on two head.
Freshman Kolton Burnett took first in saddle bronc riding after finishing third in the long go (71) while taking first in the short go with 72 points to finish with 143 points on two head.
In steer wrestling, T-Bird freshman Landon Beardsworth took fourth overall after finishing first in the long go (4.7 seconds) and fourth in the short go (6.9).
NMJC's Wyatt Hayes took ninth in tie down roping in the long go (9.9), but didn't record a time in the short go.
The NMJC men sit in fourth place in the Southwest Region standings with 1,660 points. Tarleton State is in first (3,777.5) and is followed by Western Texas (2,310) and Weatherford (2,080). The T-Birds are 22.5 points ahead of Odessa College.
As for the women's team, Kellie Collier paced the Lady T-Birds with a fourth-place finish in barrel racing. The Hereford, Texas, native took ninth in the long go (13.98) and third in the short go (13.88) to finish with an average of 27.86. She is in third place in the regional standings.
NMJC sophomore and Santa Fe native Kacey Clark split fourth through eighth in the breakaway roping long go (2.4 seconds) but didn't record a time in the short go.
The NMJC women are in sixth place in the region with 577 points. Eastern New Mexico is in first (1,602) followed by Odessa (1,297), Tarleton State (1,291.84), Texas Tech (606.84) and West Texas A&M (590).
NMJC next competes at the Howard College Rodeo in Big Spring, Texas.
