Montoya Places 3rd at the Thunderbird Rodeo
Quincy Montoya led the T-Birds this week with a third-place finish as NMJC women's rodeo sent three women to the Short Round of the inaugural Thunderbird Rodeo in Hobbs, NM on Saturday, Oct. 25.
"It is very rewarding to have hosted the first Thunderbird Rodeo and see our athletes and community come together to do so," NMJC women's rodeo head coach Alexa Wilcox said. "We are very fortunate for all of the support and extremely grateful to everyone who came out and/or helped!"
Quincy Montoya tied for fourth in the Long Round with a 9.7 to earn 25 points in the goat tying. Montoya was third in the Short Round to pick up 40 points with a 9.7 and was third in average at 19.4 seconds for another 40 points. The sophomore finished with 105 points on the weekend.
"We were very proud of Quincy for going and doing what we know she's capable of," Coach Wilcox said. "Quincy has overcome a lot to make those two runs, and I expect that we will see a lot more of that to come. She works relentlessly and I'm happy to see some of that pay off for her."
Maysa Schiffner was seventh in the breakdown roping with a time of 3.6 seconds. She broke the barrier in the Short Round to record a 13.0 and finish seventh in the short go and seventh in the average.
Macye Maben was tied for 10th in the breakaway roping for the Long Round with a 3.9 second run. Maben was a no time in the Short Round.
Montoya accounted for all 105 points of the women's team points this week. The women's team is in 10th place in the Caprock Region standings with 118.33 points.
The Thunderbirds are right back at it Thursday, Oct. 30 in Lubbock, Texas for the Texas Tech Rodeo held Oct 30-Nov. 1 at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center.
"It was a long week, and our team put a lot of hours in, but there is no time to rest," Coach Wilcox said. "The Texas Tech Rodeo will be a very different set up than what we've seen so far, so we are back in the practice pen to prepare. Thankfully our team can adapt, and I expect them to thrive on the shorter scores we will see in Lubbock. I think all of our team is excited for the faster set ups."
