T-Bird (W-Rodeo) Sends 3 to Short Round at Texas Tech
The NMJC women's rodeo team ended the Texas Tech Rodeo with three T-Birds in the Short Round this week in Lubbock, Texas.
Freshman Maysa Schiffner tied for seventh with an 8.6 second run in the first go alongside two of her teammates. In the Short Round, she placed T-3 with 9.0 to grab 30 points. She was T-4 in the average for an additional 25 points.
Sophomore Quincy Montoya finished third in the Long Round of the goat tying with an 8.3 second run for 40 points. She unfortunately was a no time in the Short Round. Her goat in the short go kicked free otherwise she would have won the rodeo. Montoya is sixth in the goat tying for the Caprock Region with 145 total points.
Ashley Weber and Maizie Meech had déjà vu the whole rodeo this week in the goat tying. The pair had the exact same 8.6 second run in the Long Round to tie for seventh. In the Short Round, they had a 15.4 to finish T-6 for five points and then tied for sixth in the average for another five points each.
"I was very proud of our goat tiers in Lubbock," NMJC women's rodeo head coach Alexa Wilcox said. "They went out and made smart runs. Unfortunately, we had a tough go in the short round with some tricky goats. Quincy made a great run and had her goat pull a leg last second - we are back to the practice pen to make a minor change to hopefully avoid that in the future."
The T-Birds picked up 95 points on Saturday between Schiffner and Montoya. NMJC is in ninth place in the Caprock Region with 213.33 points.
The Thunderbirds gear up for their final rodeo of the fall at the Clarendon College Rodeo in Childress, Texas Nov. 13-15.
"This fall season hasn't been all we hoped for, but I've been proud of the effort and commitment shown by the team," Coach Wilcox said. "They've done a lot of great things as individuals and as a whole. They're still hungry and working hard. I'm ready to see our team capitalize on opportunities in Childress."
