Montoya Earns 2nd All-Around Title at WTC Rodeo
The T-Bird women's rodeo team finished with three student-athletes in the Short Round of the Western Texas College Rodeo on Saturday, March 28.
Quincy Montoya won the all-around for the second time this season in Snyder, Texas. Montoya was tied for 10th in the Long Round of the breakaway roping with a 2.4 second run. She recorded another 2.4 in the Short Round to tie for fourth and pick up 25 points. Montoya was fifth in average at 4.8 seconds to add another 20 points for a total of 45 points overall.
Montoya was ninth in the Long Round of the goat tying with a time of 7.3 seconds. She was a no time in the Short Round. Montoya did not pick up any points in the goat tying but it was still enough for her to claim the all-around title at the WTC Rodeo.
Montoya holds steady in the No. 1 spot of the all-round with 475 points.
"Quincy is consistent and the all-around title this weekend shows that," NMJC women's rodeo head coach Alexa Wilcox said. "In reality, she didn't have a stellar weekend, but her consistency and commitment won out. We can expect that from her the rest of the year and I'm looking forward to watching how that pays off."
Bella King tied for second place in the Long Round of the breakaway roping with a 2.0 second run. She earned 40 points in the Long Round but was a no time in the short go this week.
"It was a long time coming for Bella and we are proud of her for capitalizing," Coach Wilcox said. "She had some bad luck in the Short Round but now that she's broken the ice, you can expect to see her name more the rest of the year."
Maizie Meech tied for ninth in the Long Round of the breakaway roping. Meech was unable to rope the calf in the short go and received a no time.
"I'm very proud of all three girls who made it back to the Short," Coach Wilcox said. "They were aggressive and played to win. I hope to see that from the rest of our team in Big Spring."
The women's team added 45 points this week and are in eighth place in the Caprock Region with 568.33 points.
The T-Birds will have a week off before they compete again at the Howard College Rodeo in Big Spring, Texas April 9-11.
