Sandren Set 2 Records, NMJC finishes 8th in Amarillo
Tova Sandren had a career week setting the 36 and 54-hole school records at the WT Fall Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Sandren shot 69-68 in her first two rounds to post 5-under and break Hinano Kishida's school record of 4-under set Sept. 24, 2024, at the High Country Shootout. The second-round 68 is the second-lowest round ever recorded at NMJC behind Nanami Hayakawa's 67 in 2023.
The Halmstad, Sweden native shot a final-round 73 (+2) to set the 54-hole school record at 3-under. She birdied her last two holes to accomplish that feat. The 54-hole record was originally 2-under set by Nanami Hayakawa at the Chicken Express Collegiate on Oct. 24, 2023.
Sandren was tied for fourth in the tournament with 11 birdies, tied for fifth in pars with 36, and tied for second in par-4 scoring at 1-under.
"I'm so proud of and excited for Tova. She played smart off the tee, gave herself a lot of birdie opportunities, and made a lot of putts," NMJC women's golf head coach Kendalyn Ferguson. "Overall, she found a great balance between playing smart when needed and being aggressive when it counted. It's exciting to know she's only a freshman in her fall semester, and she's only going to keep getting better with more experience."
Host West Texas A&M won the invitational at 5-over par. Cameron's Maria Jose Savoca and West Texas A&M's Sarah Reed were the top individuals at 4-under par. The Thunderbirds finished the week in eighth place at 40-over.
Sophie Brothwood opened her tournament with a 1-over 72 followed by rounds of 78-77. The freshman finished at 14-over in a tie for 35th place.
Megan Dawson ended her tournament in a tie for 42nd place. Dawson fired rounds of 76-78-75 to post 16-over par. The freshman tied for fifth place in the field with 36 pars.
Giuliana Frutos went 81-76-74 over 54 holes in Amarillo. The sophomore shot 18-over to finish T-45. Dear Phermthongmak also finished T-45 this week. The freshman was 18-over after shooting 80-76-75 to round out the team score.
Chase Fields was the lone individual for NMJC. She shot 73-78-82 to finish T-52 at 20-over par.
NMJC's next match is the Chicken Express Classic Oct. 13-14 in Plainview, Texas at Plainview Country Club.
