Sandren Sets Multiple Records, NMJC (W-Golf) Shatters Team Records
NMJC women's golf broke seven school records this week in Plainview, Texas at the Chicken Express Classic.
Freshman Tova Sandren continued her recent tear on the course winning the individual title at 10-under par. Sandren shot 63-68-72 to win her first tournament with the Thunderbirds.
The first round 63 (-8) was the lowest round in school history breaking Nanami Hayakawa's 3-under 67 set at the Westerner Invite in 2023.
The 10-under 54-hole score shattered the previous record (-3) set by herself last tournament in Amarillo. The 11-under 36-hole score was six shots better than her previous school record she set in Amarillo as well.
The Halmstad, Sweden native set the school record Oct. 13-14 for most birdies at 16, lowest 18-hole, lowest 36 hole, and lowest 54 hole record.
The Thunderbirds shot under par as a team for the first time in program history finishing at 6-under at Plainview CC. NMJC shot a 10-under 274, a 7-under 277, and an 11-over 295.
The T-Bird 18-hole record was +1 set at the High Country Shootout in 2024. The 36-hole record was also the High Country Shootout in 2024 at 2-over. The 54-hole record was set at 33-over in 2023 at the Chicken Express Classic.
Dear Phermthongmak finished fourth this week in Plainview. The freshman shot under par for the first time in her career with back-to-back 1-under 70s and posted a final-round 73 to shoot even par.
Giuliana Frutos fired a 70-68 in her first two rounds on Monday to sit under par for the first time in her career after 36 holes. Frutos shot 76 in her final round to finish 1-over in a tie for fifth place. The sophomore led the field in par-3 scoring at 1-under par.
Sophomore Chase Fields made her debut with the top team coming in seventh place. She opened with a career-best 71 and followed that round with a 73 and a 74. Fields finished the tournament at 5-over par.
Sophie Brothwood rounded out the team score for the T-Birds with an 8-over ninth-place finish. Brothwood shot consecutive even par 71s but faltered slightly in the final round with a 79. The freshman was T-5 in par-5 scoring at 4-under par.
Now moving over to the individuals.
Ella Cornwell had a fantastic tournament with the T-Birds this week. The Ormskirk, England native shot a 1-under 70 in her opening round and then followed it up with two straight 71s to finish in third place at 1-under par. Cornwell tied for fifth at 3-under in par-5 scoring and was fourth at 1-over in par-4 scoring.
Freshman Ronja Nordell fired a career-low 71 in her first 18 holes. A 73-80 in her last 36 holes put her in 11th place at 11-over. Stefany Crozier shot back-to-back 77 through her first 36 holes. A final-round 78 moved her to 19-over and into 18th place.
Jordyn Cruz placed 23rd at 30-over following rounds of 80-76-87. Zoe Munoz finished T-24 shooting 83-86-79 to finish 35-over.
The Thunderbirds will play in their final event of the fall at the Midwestern State Women's Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas Oct. 20-21.
