NMJC (W-Golf) Earns 1st Win of Spring
The NMJC women's golf team won their first tournament of 2026 and second tournament of the 2025-26 season at the Top of Texas Invitational on Tuesday, March 10.
The Thunderbirds shot 96-over (305-332-311) to defeat University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) by 12 shots (+108), and Wayland Baptist by 39 shots (+135). Amy Reavis of USAO won the tournament individually at 11-over par. T-Birds Ella Cornwell and Tova Sandren made the all-tournament team with their 16-over and 20-over performances respectively.
Individual Ella Cornwell was the top finisher for NMJC this week in Amarillo, Texas. The freshman opened the tournament with a 3-over 73 and then shot a 5-over 76 in Round 2. Cornwell's final round was an 8-over 79. Cornwell finished at 16-over par in a tie for second which was a career-best finish. This is the second time she has finished in the 70s in all three rounds.
Tova Sandren led the T-Birds on the team side shooting a tournament-low even-par 71 in Round 1. The first round featured a bogey on No. 1 and a birdie on No. 2. She recorded pars on the other 16 holes. Her second round went awry as the Swede started 12-over through her first 10 holes. Sandren went on to shoot a 14-over 85. Sandren settled down during the final round firing a 6-over 77 to finish fourth at 20-over in Amarillo, Texas.
Freshman Megan Dawson started Day 1 with an opening-round 7-over 78 and followed it up with an 11-over 82. Dawson shot another 78 in her final round to post 25-over and finish in seventh place at Tascosa GC.
Giuliana Frutos was one spot behind Dawson in eighth place at 26-over par. The sophomore shot a 6-over 77 in Round 1 and a 15-over 86 in Round 2. She bounced back in the third round with a 5-over 76.
Freshman Sophie Brothwood fired an 8-over 79 in her opening round and in Round 2 finished with a 10-over 81. The Shropshire, England native shot a 9-over 80 in her final round to finish at 27-over in a tie for ninth.
Stefany Crozier was the fifth and final member of the team score. Crozier had a tough week out on the course shooting 81-84-89 in 54 holes. The sophomore was 41-over and finished in 16th place.
Ronja Nordell was the second individual competing this week. Nordell shot an 11-over 82 in Round 1 and a 10-over 81 in Round 2. The Swede ended her tournament with a 13-over 84. Nordell finished in 12th place at 34-over par.
The Thunderbirds next event is the Southern Colorado Open in Pueblo, CO March 22-23 at Walking Stick GC.
