T-Bird (W-Golf) Places 2nd at Southwest District Preview
The Thunderbirds finished runner-up this week at Southwest District Preview on Tuesday, March 31.
Odessa College shot 19-over to win the tournament in Weatherford, Texas. NMJC shot 306-304 over 36 holes to finish runner-up at 34-over par. Nami Luesattha of Odessa College won the individual title at 4-under par.
Tova Sandren recorded her seventh top-6 finish of the year for the Thunderbirds. The freshman shot a 2-under 70 in her opening round at Canyon West.
The second round was where she ran into some trouble. The Swede stumbled with a 9-over 81 to finish her tournament in fourth place at 7-over par. Sandren was consistent across the course as she tied for fourth place in par-3, par-4, and par-5 scoring.
Ella Cornwell earned her second consecutive top-10 finish. The freshman shot a 7-over 79 in Round 1. Her final round was superb as she fired a 2-over 74 to finish in sixth place at 9-over par. Cornwell was tied for second in par-3 scoring this week at even par.
Sophie Brothwood opened her first round with a 6-over 78. The second round saw the Englishwoman shoot a 5-over 77 to finish in 10th place at 11-over par. Brothwood was tied for fourth in par-5 scoring in Weatherford at 1-under.
Freshman Megan Dawson finished Round 1 with an 8-over 80. Dawson recorded a 4-over 76 in her final round to finish the tournament T-11 at 12-over par.
Sophomore Giuliana Frutos was the final member of the team score. The Asuncion, Paraguay native started her tournament with a 5-over 77. Frutos recorded a 7-over 79 in her final round to finish T-11 at 12-over.
Individual Dear Phermthongmak shot an 11-over 83 and an 8-over 80 to finish 18th at 19-over. The other individual for the T-Birds was Ronja Nordell who shot a 15-over 87 in Round 1 and a 14-over 86 in her final round to finish 28th at 29-over.
The Thunderbirds next event is the WT Desert Invite in Tucson, Ariz. April 6-7 at Ventana Canyon GC.
