Coombs honored as West Region Field Athlete of the Year; Blackwill honored as COY
New Orleans, LOUISIANNA
NMJC freshman standout, Latavia Coombs and Head Coach Keith Blackwill were honored on Monday for their efforts during the 2016 outdoor track & field season.
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced that Coombs and Blackwill were recipients of the 2016 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Field Athlete and Head Coach of the Year for the West Region.
There are four regions (Atlantic, Central, Midwest, West) and the USTFCCCA honors the best male and female track and field athletes as well as the top head and assistant coaches.
Member coaches voted to determine the winners from each region.
Coombs had a tremendous outdoor season. The freshman from St. Catherine, Jamaica, leads the nation in the triple jump with a leap of 42'9 3/4". She has also qualified for the NJCAA national meet in the Heptathlon, Long Jump, 100m Hurdles and the 400m hurdles.
Coach Blackwill collected his fourth West Region Coach of the Year honors and second of the year as he was also selected as the West Region Coach of the Year at the NJCAA Indoor Championships.
The Outdoor Championships will begin on Tuesday, May 17, 2017 and run through Thursday. The event can be viewed online by clicking on the link below.
