NMJC (W-T&F) Starts Indoor Season at Corky Classic
The New Mexico Junior College women's track & field team starts their indoor season Friday, Jan. 17 in Lubbock, Texas.
The Thunderbirds will be competing in the Corky Classic Jan 17-18 at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.
NMJC is coming off an indoor season in 2024 where the Thunderbirds finished third nationally. The T-Birds followed up the trophy-winning performance with a national championship during the outdoor season which marked the second consecutive year the women's team was able to accomplish the feat.
The T-Birds return 16 sophomores from the 2024 national champion squad. The Thunderbird sophomores are headlined by two-time individual national champion (Weight Throw & Hammer Throw) Tania Millena Ancelmo Da Silva. The women's side features 13 new faces coming into the fold for the 2025 track & field season.
The T-Birds will be under the guidance of Kathleen Raske who was tasked with leading the women's track & field program in July of 2024.
"We're excited to open up our 2025 indoor season," head women's track & field coach Kathleen Raske said. "It's going to be a highly competitive meet in Lubbock. We're going to learn a lot about our athletes this weekend in their first competition for the season. We're expecting some really solid performances. But also, this first meet serves as a way to figure out where we're at and then what we need to do moving forward."
The Corky Classic begins on Friday in Lubbock with the field events from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. CST. The running events start at 4 p.m. CST and finish around 9:30 p.m. CST. Saturday's field events start at 11 a.m. and go through 3 p.m. CST. The track events also start at 11 a.m. but will conclude around 4:30 p.m. CST.
The expectation for the women's track & field team remains the same as in 2024 and that is to compete for a championship come March and May.
"When it comes to the team, it's all about the championship," Coach Raske said. "So, we're definitely looking to win the indoor women's national title this season and this week is the start of our journey to the championship."
The Corky Classic will be streamed live on ESPN+ (Day 1 & Day 2). The schedule can be found by clicking here along with the heat sheets (Day 1 & Day 2), and live results.
