Salas-Lozano Obliterates Shot Put Record, T-Bird (W-T&F) Qualifies 7 at Stan Scott & Multi
The T-Bird women's track and field team competed Jan. 30 - Feb. 1 at the Stan Scott & Multi in Lubbock, Texas.
NMJC finished the weekend with seven new national qualifiers, seven improved qualifiers, and one broken school record.
Sophomore Esteisy Salas-Lozano smashed her own indoor shot put school record by 1.06m on Saturday. The Colombian's throw of 16.25m surpassed her previous indoor record of 15.19m and cements her as the No. 1 thrower in the shot put for the NJCAA.
Nandy Kihuyu may have had her best week in a T-Bird uniform at the Stan Scott & Multi. The sophomore sprinter was an improved qualifier by 1.64 seconds in the 400m with a time of 54.68. The finish is currently No. 1 in Juco. Kihuyu ran a 24.06 in the 200m to improve on her previous national standard by .27 seconds. The Englishwoman is now No. 3 in JUCO for the event. Kihuyu qualified in the 60m for the first time in her career, running a 7.55 to rank No. 9 in JUCO.
The distance relay medley team of Emilly Silva, Ysanne Peart, Jody Ann Mitchell, and Amal Kachouri nearly broke the school record when they posted a time of 11:49.64. The finish was .20 seconds off the previous record and is ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA.
Sophomore Kamaria Knight improved on her national standard in the 60m by .06 seconds after recording a 7.49 in the race. The finish is No. 4 in the NJCAA. Knight hit the national standard in the 200m when she crossed the line in 24.49 to rank No. 8 in JUCO.
Amal Kachouri ran a 5:00.06 in the mile this weekend to nationally qualify and move into the No. 4 slot in the NJCAA for the event.
Francesca Alvarado was an improved qualifier in the 3000m by 19.91 seconds with her finish of 10:12.82. The time is No. 6 in JUCO. Ines Mrabet competed in the 3000m as well. The Tunisian recorded a 10:24.19 to improve her national standard by 22.34 seconds and rank No. 12 in the NJCAA.
Jumper Sofia Mosquera Rodriquez was the final improved qualifier this weekend for the T-Birds. She leapt .14m further than her previous best to record a mark of 11.71m. The jump moved Rodriquez to No. 5 in the NJCAA for the triple jump.
Yosiris Cordoba reached the national standard in the shot put with her throw of 12.95m. The toss is No. 8 in the NJCAA currently.
Sprinter Tuwana McLean is headed to nationals with her qualifying run of 56.97 in the 400m. The time is No. 10 in JUCO for the event.
Daphne Kausz met the national standard in the 800m with her finish of 2:21.65. The sophomore ended the weekend as the No. 17 runner in the NJCAA for the 800m.

The T-Birds will take the week off before competing at the Jarvis Scott Open Feb. 14-15 in Lubbock, Texas at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.
