New Mexico Junior College Volleyball Program Gets New Head Coach
HOBBS NM- New Mexico Junior College head volleyball coach Alex Lehocky has resigned as head coach of the T-Birds. Lehocky has accepted a new position in North Dakota as head volleyball coach for the Minot State University Beavers.
Coach Lehocky spent three seasons with the T-Birds after starting up the volleyball program with assistant coach Holli Reyna at New Mexico Junior College in 2019. During her time at the college, Lehocky coached one NJCAA Second Team All-American, five WJCAC All-Conference players, two WJCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention players, and four Third Team Academic All-Americans. In her three seasons, one season being canceled due to COVID, Lehocky finished with a cumulative record of 38-29.
"This was a very tough decision to advance my career to the DII level because NMJC has been so accommodating, accepting and supportive of the volleyball program. The administration, coaches, faculty and staff have been such a pleasure to work with and have been a huge help in my professional development" says Lehocky. She will hand the program over to former assistant coach Holli Reyna, who has been alongside coach Lehocky for the past three seasons. "It is exciting to see Coach Reyna as the new NMJC head Volleyball coach, and I wish her and all future Thunderbirds the best of luck" she added.
Before coach Reyna got to New Mexico Junior College in 2019, she spent four seasons as assistant coach for the Midland College Chaparrals where she led them to a 76-52 overall record and coached many WJCAC All-Conference players. Reyna also spent two seasons as head volleyball coach for the Clarendon College Bulldogs in 2012 and 2013.
Reyna says she is thrilled to represent the T-Birds in her new role as head coach. "I assisted Coach Lehocky in establishing a volleyball program from the ground up in 2019, and with the support of NMJC leadership we have been able to move quickly in a direction to be national contenders, and have held a phenomenal team GPA in the process" she says.
Athletic director, Deron Clark, says both women have been a blessing to the program. "Alex will be missed and NMJC is excited to begin the new era under Holli. The combination of both of their gifts has immediately projected NMJC into a conference contender with aspirations of becoming a national force in the immediate future", said Clark. "When both coaches became a part of the NMJC Athletic program, I told both them and the athletes that winning is important and that it is the driver to the culture that all of our programs strive for. Both coaches have embraced that attitude and have built something to be proud of" he added. NMJC wishes both Lehocky and Reyna the best in their new career directions.
