NMJC Defeats Midland in Region V West Semifinal
NMJC volleyball squeaked by Midland College Saturday morning with a five-set win to send the T-Birds to the Region V West Championship (12-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8).
The Thunderbirds trailed 6-3 in the fifth set before rattling off 12 of the next 14 points to send NMJC to the championship match.
The Thunderbirds have won a school record 12 matches in a row.
Freshman outside hitter Iva Popovic led the T-Birds with a school record 28 kills and 17 digs in the semifinal win. Sophomore libero Milena Cernjanski chipped in 30 digs on the defensive side.
Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Machado notched her 18th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 18 digs in the four-set win.
Sophomore setter Lacie Schooley recorded her 19th double-double of the season, a team-high, adding 41 assists and 19 digs.
Defensive specialist Luiza Arsufi registered 17 digs. Middle blocker Olivia Swipiarski finished with a career-high five blocks.
