NMJC split the Saturday series to move to 3-1 on the year.
Match 3
The T-Birds swept the North Central Texas College 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 on Saturday, Aug. 23.
NMJC was off to a tough start in Set 1 after falling behind 12-6. NCTC maintained the lead and were ahead 16-11. Five straight points by the T-Birds tied the score at 16-16. NMJC traded points and then took a commanding 23-19 lead. NMJC went on to went on to win the set 25-23 via a serving error.
The T-Birds trailed 13-9 to NCTC in the second set. Later in the set they tied up the match at 20 apiece. A Leticia Neves kill and a block by Duda Tonella and Neves ended the second set in favor of the T-Birds 25-21.
The Thunderbirds were leading the third set 21-16 when the Lions rattled off five points in a row to tie the set at 21 all. NMJC bounced back scoring the next four points to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Setter Noemi Marinho recorded 14 assists in the sweep. Outside Leticia Neves posted 11 digs and seven kills. Zuzanna Zalewska registered 17 digs Saturday morning.
Outside hitter Andjela Sojic finished with eight kills.
Ava Kincaid and Zaira Romero both registered six kills. Middle's Duda Tonella and Elif Akarsu finished with three blocks each. Setter Kawena Crowell added 10 assists.
Match 4
The Thunderbirds struggled offensively in the final match of the Midland Kick-off Classic, accumulating only 11 kills in a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Colby.
The T-Birds start was rough with starting outside hitter Rebecca Rosculet going down with an injury early in the first set that took the wind out of the team's sails. NMJC was unable to rebound from the injury and fell in straight sets to the Trojans 25-14, 25-9, 25-17.
Outside hitter Leticia Neves led the way, finishing with eight digs and four kills.
Setter Noemi Marinho recorded five digs and five assists.
NMJC (3-1) drops their first match of the year. They will play next against Navarro College Friday, Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. CDT in Brenham, Texas.
