The Thunderbirds split their matchups on Friday, Aug. 29 with a win over No. 12 Navarro and a loss to No. 10 Trinity Valley.
Match 1
The T-Birds upset No. 12 Navarro College in five sets behind outside hitter Andjela Sojic's 11 kills and four blocks.
NMJC lost the first set 25-19 and then bounced back with a 25-20 win in Set 2. The third set went the way of Navarro 25-23 but the Thunderbirds stayed alive with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. NMJC outlasted Navarro in the fifth set 15-11 to secure the match.
Setter Noemi Marinho finished with 18 assists and nine digs. Outside hitter Leticia Neves recorded 10 kills and seven digs.
Middle Zaira Romero registered nine kills and nine digs. Libero Lauren Shiplet posted a career-high 21 digs.
Match 2
NMJC lost the second match of the day in straight sets to No. 10 Trinity Valley.
The Thunderbirds led the first set by seven points, 19-12 and by three points 21-18. Trinity Valley rallied back to win the set 25-23. The second set was all Cardinals as they won 25-18. In the third set, Trinity Valley upended the T-Birds 25-21 to win in straight sets.
Middle Zaira Romero finished with 13 kills and seven digs. Outside hitter Andjela Sojic finished the day with double digit kills at 11.
Setter Noemi Marinho ended the match with 19 assists. Middle Elif Akarsu registered five blocks. Libero Lauren Shiplet tallied 13 digs.
NMJC moves to 4-2 on the year.
