NMJC split on Day 2 of the Kruse Classic in Brenham, Texas on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Match 3
Match 3 did not go the way of the T-Birds as they fell in straight sets to tournament host No. 20 Blinn.
NMJC had set point in the first set 25-24 but Blinn was able to tie the score up at 25 apiece. The T-Birds fought off three set points, however Blinn ultimately took the set 29-27.
The Buccaneers won the second set 25-23 to take a commanding 2-0 lead. NMJC ran out of gas in the third set and fell 25-21 to drop the match in straight sets.
Middle Zaira Romero finished with 11 kills and eight digs. Libero Lauren Shiplet added 14 digs. Outside hitter Andjela Sojic finished with nine kills.
Sophomore Leticia Neves registered eight kills and seven digs. Setter Kawena Crowell recorded 12 assists in the loss.
Match 4
NMJC's final match of the weekend was a marathon against No. 13 Eastern Wyoming College.
The T-Birds dropped the first set by a score of 25-21. The second set was all NMJC as they took down the Lancers 25-15. The third set was in favor of NMJC as well with them taking a 25-13 win.
Eastern Wyoming led 22-20 in the fourth set and scored three straight points to claim the win 25-20 to force a decisive fifth set. In the fifth set, NMJC prevailed 15-12 to earn their second ranked win of the tournament.
Outside hitter Leticia Neves recorded 11 kills and 18 digs to pick up her second double-double of the season. Outside hitter Andjela Sojic recorded 14 kills and tied her career high with 10 blocks to pick up her first double-double of the season.
Setter Noemi Marinho finished with 23 assists and 12 digs to notch her second double-double of her career. Middle Zaira Romero registered nine kills and four blocks.
Middle Elif Akarsu recorded a career-high eight blocks and middle Duda Tonella added five blocks.
Libero Lauren Shiplet tallied 18 digs while setter Kawena Crowell 16 assists.
NMJC moves to 5-3 on the year and will play Seward County CC in Odessa, Texas starting Friday, Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. CDT.
