The Thunderbirds split their Friday matches with a four-set win over Seward and a four-set loss to No. 18 Eastern Arizona.
Match 1
NMJC earned a four-set win (25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19) over Seward County Friday morning.
The T-Birds won their first two sets and were looking for a three-set sweep at the OC Invitational. NMJC led the third set 18-15, but he Saints scored six straight points to flip the score to a 21-18 advantage. Seward went on to defeat the Thunderbirds 25-20 in the third set.
NMJC was dominant in the fourth set as they won 25-19 and secured the match 3-1.
Outside hitter Andjela Sojic recorded a season-high 17 kills and six blocks. Middle Zaira Romero posted 12 kills, eight digs, and seven blocks.
Setter Noemi Marinho recorded 20 assists and Libero Lauren Shiplet finished the match with 18 digs.
Outside hitter Leticia Neves registered seven kills and seven digs. Middle Elif Akarsu tied her career high on Friday with eight blocks.
Match 2
No. 18 Eastern Arizona College knocked off NMJC in four sets Friday afternoon.
NMJC grabbed a one-set lead after taking down the Gila Monsters in the first set 25-19.
The T-Birds trailed late into the second set by seven points 22-15. NMJC scored six straight points to pull within one point, 22-21. Eastern Arizona scored three straight points to even the sets up at 1-1.
The Gila Monsters upended the T-Birds in the next two sets 25-17 and 25-20 to win the match in four sets.
Setter Kawena Crowell recorded her first career double-double finishing with 16 digs and 10 assists. Outside hitter Leticia Neves finished with 13 kills and nine digs. Setter Noemi Marinho recorded 19 assists and eight digs. Sophomore Andjela Sojic added 12 kills.
Middle Zaira Romero registered seven kills and 14 digs in the loss. Libero Lauren Shiplet tallied 18 digs.
