NMJC (VB) Comes up Short in Midland
NMJC fell to Midland College on the road in straight sets on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
The Chaps started the first set in the lead 16-11 and maintained a five-point advantage 23-18 later in the set. Midland went on to take the first set 25-19.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair. The set was tied 8-8, 15-15, and then NMJC took a narrow 22-20 lead. Midland scored four out of the next five points to win 25-23 and hold a two-set lead.
In the third set, the T-Birds were in front 19-16. Midland battled back and tied the third set up at 20 apiece. The set was tied again at 22 all, but the Chaparrals were able to score three straight points to win the match 25-22.
Leticia Neves posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. This is the outside hitter's eighth double-double of the year.
Setter Kawena Crowell tallied a team-high 14 assists. Libero Lauren Shiplet registered 21 digs in the loss to the Chaps.
Right side Deniz Akgul added nine kills and four blocks. Ava Kincaid finished the match with 10 digs and seven kills. Freshman Noemi Marinho recorded 10 assists and eight digs.
The Thunderbirds drop to 12-9 (3-2) on the year and will face No. 4 Odessa College on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. CDT in Midland, Texas.
