NMJC women's volleyball lost a three-set match to No. 4 Odessa College on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The T-Birds were off to a terrific start in the first set as they led 9-3 over the Wranglers. Odessa woke up and went on a 9-1 run to move ahead 12-10 for the first time in the match. The Wranglers controlled the rest of the set and went on to win 25-16.
Odessa was in front for most of the second set and held a 22-20 lead. They would win three of the next four points to take a 25-21 victory and a commanding 2-0 advantage.
The Wranglers set the tone in the third set with a big block on the first point. NMJC ran out of steam and fell 25-15 against No. 4 Odessa.
Middle Zaira Romero finished with a team-high six kills and three blocks. Setter Kawena Crowell tallied 13 assists and five digs. Libero Lauren Shiplet registered 12 digs in the loss.
Right side's Deniz Akgul and Andjela Sojic both recorded five kills. Freshman Noemi Marinho finished with 10 assists and seven digs.
The Thunderbirds drop to 12-10 (3-3) on the year and will play No. 9 NMMI on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. MDT in Hobbs, NM.
