NMJC (VB) Defeats Westerners in 5 Sets
NMJC snapped a five-match losing streak Saturday afternoon with a five-set victory over Western Texas College.
The T-Birds started the match with a 25-17 win in the first set. Western Texas jumped out to a 17-9 lead in Set 2 and went on to win the set 25-19.
The Westerners held a one-point lead in the third set 22-21, but the T-Birds woke up and won four straight points to triumph 25-22 in Set 3.
NMJC started the fourth set knotted up at 12 apiece. The Westerners scored six of the next seven points to hold an 18-13 advantage. Western maintained a lead at 22-18, however the Thunderbirds scored five straight points to take a 23-22 lead. WTC won the next three points to grab a 25-23 win and force a decisive fifth set.
The T-Birds dominated the fifth set and won the match 15-5.
Sophomore Deniz Akgul finished with a match-high 16 kills in the five-set win. Middle Zaira Romero recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Libero Lauren Shiplet posted 17 digs while defensive specialist Zuzanna Zalewska added 13 digs.
Outside hitters Gabriella Rebolledo and Leticia Neves both finished with nine kills. Middle Sixtine Deprecq set a career high in kills with seven.
The Thunderbirds improved to 13-13 (4-6) on the year and will play Clarendon College on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. CDT in Clarendon, TX.
