NMJC (VB) Gets Back to .500
NMJC women's volleyball made it back to .500 for the year with a four-set win at home against Midland College on Saturday, Oct. 25.
NMJC got off to a good start in the first set leading 16-11. Midland cut the score to 19-18 but NMJC rattled off five straight points to hold a 24-18 advantage. Midland fought off six set points to tie the match up at 24 all. A hitting error put NMJC in front 25-24 and a tip kill by Leticia Neves made it 26-24 in Set 1.
NMJC ran into some trouble in the second set and fell 25-22. Midland led 18-17 in the latter part of the third set. The Thunderbirds went on a 7-3 run to close the third set 25-21 and take a 2-1 lead.
Midland and NMJC were knotted up at 13 apiece midway through the fourth set. A 7-2 scoring streak flipped the set in favor of the T-Birds 20-15. The Thunderbirds went on to win the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.
Setter Noemi Marinho picked up her ninth double-double of the season with 17 assists and 13 digs. Leticia Neves also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Outside hitter Deniz Akgul registered 12 kills, seven digs, and five blocks.
Right side Andjela Sojic finished with 11 kills and seven blocks. Middles Duda Tonella and Sixtine Deprecq both recorded six blocks each.
NMJC is now tied with Midland College and Amarillo College for the fourth spot in the WJCAC standings with two matches to play. The top four members of the WJCAC move on to the Region V Tournament.
The Thunderbirds move to 14-14 (5-7) on the year and will play Odessa College on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. MDT in Hobbs, NM.
Sophomore Night will convene at 5:50 p.m. MDT just prior to the match with the Wranglers. NMJC will be recognizing seven sophomores in Ava Kincaid, Leticia Neves, Zaira Romero, Rebecca Rosculet, Deniz Akgul, Duda Tonella, and Andjela Sojic.
