The Thunderbirds won Game 1 and 2 of the doubleheader versus Butler CC on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Game 1
NMJC run ruled the Grizzlies 11-1 in Game 1.
Center fielder Casen Savage put the T-Birds out front in the top of the first with a 3-run home run. Peyton Pierce had an RBI single in the same inning to make the score 4-0 NMJC after one inning.
Butler scored their lone run of the game on a groundout in the third inning. The T-Birds added five runs in the bottom of the third to grab complete control of the game.
Talan Barraza drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run of the third inning. Then Jeter Battles came up to bat and hit a bases clearing triple. A sac fly from Javier Diaz put the fifth runner across as NMJC led 9-1 after three.
NMJC scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth via an error and an RBI single by Talan Barraza to push the game into run rule territory at 11-1.
Sergio Lugo earned his second win of the season Saturday, throwing complete game. The sophomore right-handed pitcher threw five innings giving up four hits and one earned run in the win.
The T-Birds finished with 11 hits and no errors in the Game 1 win.
Game 2
The T-Birds defeated Butler CC 9-5 in Game 2 action to sweep the doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Casen Savage drove in the first run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Jesus Mejias made the score 3-0 in the third inning on a 2-run home run.
NMJC scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to grab a 9-0 lead. Javier Diaz had an RBI single, Roman Trinidad hit a 2-run double, Jesus Mejias drove in two more runs on a single, and Mekhi Brewer scored the final run scoring on an error to make it 9-0.
The Thunderbirds had a chance to run rule the Grizzlies in five innings but a great play on a line drive to first by Mejias kept the game going. The Grizzlies continued the game with a 2-run homer in the sixth and added three more runs in the eighth to pull within four runs, 9-5.
Reliever Dyllan Thiebaud went three up three down in the ninth to close out the Grizzlies 9-5.
Second baseman Jeter Battles went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Javier Diaz was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Designated hitter Jesus Mejias had a great day behind the plate going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a homer.
Andrew DeLeon started for NMJC throwing 5.1 innings and striking out five batters. The freshman southpaw allowed three hits and two earned runs on his way to his third win of the season.
