NMJC (M-Golf) Places 13th at Midwestern State
The T-Birds finished in a tie for 13th place at the Midwestern State Invitational on Tuesday, March 24.
UT Permian Basin won the 54-hole tournament with a score of 2-under par. Will Tate of UTPB won the tournament individually after shooting 10-under par in 54 holes (67-68-68).
The T-Birds were 33 shots behind the Falcons shooting 31-over (298-301-284) this week.
Freshman Riley Apodaca led the T-Birds in Wichita Falls, Texas shooting a 1-under 70 in the first round. The opening round featured eight birdies on the card. Round 2 saw the Deming, NM native shoot a 6-over 77. Apodaca reeled it back in during the final round with a 2-over 73 to finish in a tie for 35th place at 7-over.
Oliver Ruutu was the inverse of his teammate Apodaca shooting 6-over 77 in his opening round. The second round was a 2-over 73 for the Fin. Ruutu shot a 1-under 70 in his final round with an eagle and four birdies on the card. He matched all three rounds from Apodaca to finish T-35 at 7-over.
Eino Haaslahti began his first round with a familiar 6-over 77. Haaslahti recorded five bogeys in Round 2 on his way to a 5-over 76. The Turku, Finland native made five birdies in the final round to shoot the lowest round of the tournament for NMJC with a 2-under 69. He finished at 9-over in 51st place.
Tristan Kolasinski was the fourth T-Bird to shoot a 6-over 77 and third to open his round with the same score. Kolasinski was 4-over in the second round shooting 75. He settled down in the final round to fire a 1-over 72 to finish 11-over in a tie for 55th place.
Alfie Mellor was the final member of the team score. Mellor shot a 3-over 74 in Round 1. The sophomore struggled in Round 2 with a 12-over 83. The final round ended with Mellor 7-over for the day. Mellor finished his tournament T-96 at 22-over par.
The Thunderbirds next event is the Thunderbird Invite in Hobbs, NM March 30-31 at the Rockwind Community Links.
