T-Bird (M-Golf) Finishes 5th in Kingsland
NMJC men's golf finished in a tie for fifth place at the Region V Championship Tuesday, April 14 in Kingsland, Texas.
Weatherford College won the 54-hole tournament with a score of 12-under par. Odessa College was runner-up at 10-under par, and Midland College placed third at 2-under. Scott Spark of Midland College won the tournament individually after shooting 7-under par in 54 holes (70-71-68).
The T-Birds were 32 shots behind the Coyotes shooting 20-over (293-298-293) this week.
Alfie Mellor finished in the top 15 for the second straight tournament after tying for 14th place at the Legends GC. Mellor opened with an even-par 72 and then shot a 3-over 75 in Round 2. The sophomore fired a 1-under 71 in his final round to end the tournament at 2-over. Mellor tied for fourth place in par-4 scoring at 6-under.
Oliver Ruutu also tied for 14th place this week in Kingsland. The Finn posted a 2-over 74 in Round 1 and an even-par 72 in Round 2. He finished the tournament with another even-par 72 to shoot 2-over for the week. Ruutu tied for seventh place in par-4 scoring at 1-over par.
Freshman Eino Haaslahti started well in his opening round shooting a 1-under 71. He registered a 4-over 76 in Round 2 and a 5-over 77 in the final round. Haaslahti finished T-28 at 8-over par.
Tristan Kolasinski recorded a 4-over 76 in Round 1 and a 3-over 75 in Round 2. He finished his tournament with a final-round 76 to shoot 11-over and place T-35.
Rounding out the team score was Riley Apodaca. The freshman recorded a 4-over 76 in Round 1 and an 8-over 80 in the second round. Apodaca shot a final-round 74 which included a hole out eagle to finish at 14-over and in a tie for 44th place.
Nick Friedrichsen was the lone individual for the T-Birds on the course. The sophomore was 1-over in Round 1 and shot an 8-over 80 in the second round. He finished his final round with a 3-over 75 to shoot 12-over and tie for 39th place. Friedrichsen tied for fourth place in par-4 scoring at 6-under.
The Thunderbirds next event is the South Central District Championship in San Antonio, Texas at Mission Del Lago GC April 27-28.
