Poor shooting dooms Thunderbirds
Yuma, ARIZONA (November 12, 2015)
The New Mexico Junior College Women's Basketball team was cold as ice in their opening game of the Desert Classic in Yuma, Arizona as they fell to tournament host, Arizona Western 75-64 on Thursday night.
The Matador defense forced 28 Thunderbird turnovers and was suffocating all night long as they held the Thunderbirds to a dismal 27.9 percent (19-68/4-27) shooting from the field.
The Thunderbirds started the game on a 6-0 run but allowed the Matadors to close out the first quarter on a 14-4 run to take a lead that they wouldn't relinquish until the 9:01 mark of the third quarter. The teams switched leads throughout the third quarter but the Thunderbirds couldn't hold on eventually falling by 11.
Nycolle Smith had her second double-double of the season as she scored 15 points and hauled in 12 caroms. Her running mate, Daiane Machado was equally impressive and just missed her first career double-double as she scored a game high 19 and pulled down 9 rebounds herself. Camille Mills continued her solid sophomore campaign as she scored 10 points coming off the bench.
Next up for the Thunderbirds (4-2, 0-0) is the Pima Community College Aztecs (1-0) who picked up their first win of the season on Thursday as they downed Cetys University (Mexico) 86-29.
