Hobbs, NEW MEXICO
The last time the New Mexico Junior College Women's basketball team played Odessa, they escaped with a two point win. This time, the friendly confines of Caster Activity Center allowed the Thunderbirds who led by as much as 35 and maintained a 30 point lead much throughout the entire second half, to down their conference rival by 33, 81-48.
Shaniya Mitchell led all scorers with 18 points and turned in six assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore sharp shooter, Blair Richmond pumped in 15 points knocking down 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Also scoring in double figures for the Thunderbirds were Daiane Machado and Nycolle Smith with 14 and 12 points respectively.
The Thunderbirds played as well offensively as they have all year as they had 23 assists on 29 made baskets. Sophomore point guard turned in a game high seven assists to lead the charge.
NMJC is now 21-2, 7-0 in the WJCAC and will travel to Snyder, Texas on Monday to take on the Western Texas Westerners. Tip is 5:45 P.M CST.
