NMJC Suffers First Home Loss
Guard Delma Zita scored 12 points, shot 6-of-12 from the field, and snatched seven steals as the Thunderbirds suffered their first home loss of the season to Hill College 63-51.
The T-Birds started slow in the first half falling behind by eight points 18-10 after one quarter.
The Rebel lead grew to as many as 16 points with 4:46 left in the second quarter. The Thunderbirds were looking for a spark and implemented the press to do just that.
NMJC would rattle off a 10-2 run in the next two and a half minutes of play to trail by eight 28-20 with 2:09 left in the quarter. The women were unable to claw their way any closer in the first half as they would trail 34-26 going into the break.
The T-Birds continued to implement their smothering press in the third quarter. A Bianca Juzzo layup led to NMJC's first lead of the second half 39-38 with 4:18 left in the third quarter.
The Rebels quickly took back control of the game and headed into the fourth quarter with a narrow two-point lead 47-45.
NMJC's offense was stagnant in the fourth quarter making it hard to execute their full court press. The Thunderbirds made just three field goal attempts in the fourth quarter and were outscored 16-6.
Bianca Juzzo, Madina Camara, Eva Fernandez, and Mariama Sow all scored eight points on the night for the Thunderbirds. Forward Sandra Magolico finished with seven points and 11 rebounds in the loss to the Rebels.
The Thunderbirds were ineffective shooting Friday night going 20-for-67 (29.9%) from the field and 1-of-13 (7.7%) from the three-point line. The T-Birds were able to force 28 turnovers, but the stout defense was negated by the 28 turnovers they committed on offense.
The Thunderbirds stumble to 8-2 on the year. NMJC will play Mineral Area Sunday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. MDT in Hobbs, NM. Please note the game has been moved up to 1 p.m. from the previously scheduled 2 p.m. tip.
