NMJC Women Overcome Early Deficit
Sophomore guard Delma Zita went on a tear for the T-Birds Saturday afternoon finishing the game with 20 points, three assists, and three steals in the 75-55 win over Odessa College.
The T-Birds were challenged early by the Wrangler press which forced six turnovers in the first quarter. NMJC trailed by nine points, 23-14, headed into the second quarter.
NMJC started the second quarter on a 7-0 run capped off by a Danna Grenald layup to bring the T-Birds within two, 21-23. The Thunderbirds claimed their first lead of the second quarter with 1:10 left after a layup by Sandra Magolico made the score 31-30. The T-Birds would go into the half leading by two points, 32-30.
The game was a back-and-forth affair with Odessa holding onto a four-point lead 48-44 with 3:17 to go in the third quarter. NMJC closed out the third quarter on a 10-2 run to head into the fourth leading 54-50.
The Thunderbirds started the fourth quarter with a 17-0 run to take a 71-50 lead with 2:10 left in the game. NMJC held the Wranglers scoreless in the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter. The T-Birds closed out the game with a 75-55 win.
Forward Danna Grenald knocked down her first three-pointer of the season, finishing the afternoon with 16 points and nine rebounds. Sandra Magolico notched her first double-double of the season scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Eva Fernandez finished with five points and five steals.
The T-Birds shot 32-of-80 (40%) from the field, 3-for-17 (17.6%) from the three-point line, and out-rebounded the Wranglers 38-29. The T-Birds forced 29 turnovers in the win over Odessa.
The Thunderbirds improve to 12-2 on the year. NMJC will play Midland College Thursday, Jan. 12 at 5:45 p.m. MDT in Hobbs, NM.
