Davis’s 25 Powers NMJC to Victory
Pania Davis bounced back from her lowest-scoring total of the year to record 25 points and 15 rebounds as NMJC defeated Howard 91-59 on Thursday.
The 25 points matches the sophomore forward's season high she set against Garden City CC on Nov. 16, 2024.
The Hawks unexpectedly took the early 7-2 lead in the first quarter. The T-Birds countered with a 6-0 run behind back-to-back 3-pointers by Jada Graves and Amyah Sutton making the score 8-7 NMJC. A Fatime Seck 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in the quarter gave the T-Birds a 24-16 advantage.
Davis took over in the second quarter scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting while notching four rebounds. NMJC ended the first half in front 43-33.
Amyah Sutton outpaced the Hawks herself in the third quarter scoring 13 points. NMJC scored 23 points in the frame while Howard only managed 11. Sutton's impressive play put the Thunderbirds on top 66-44 at the end of the third.
The T-Birds led by as many as 35 points in the fourth quarter on their way to a 32-point win over the Hawks.
The Thunderbirds had four starters in double figures. Guard Cacia Antonio padded the stat line with 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and five steals. Amyah Sutton went 4-for-7 from the 3-point land finishing with 21 points.
Starting guard Jada Graves went 2-for-3 from the 3-point line and finished with 11 points and five assists. Fatime Seck went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to finish with nine points. Nuria Estrade tallied six rebounds.
The T-Birds shot 34-for-72 (47.2%) from the field, 11-for-24 (45.8%) from the 3-point line, and 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the charity stripe. The Thunderbirds held the Hawks to 31.3% from the field and 34.6% from the three-point line.
The No. 4 Thunderbirds improve to 18-1 (3-1) and will face Midland College 13-5 (2-1) Monday, Jan. 20 at 5:45 p.m. CST in Midland, Texas.
