No. 1 T-Bird (WBB) Earns Top-10 Win Over South Plains
The No. 1 Thunderbirds avenge their only loss of the season with a 61-53 win over No. 10 South Plains.
The victory is the sixth ranked win of the year for NMJC.
The Texans came out on fire in the first quarter leading 10-2 at the under 5:00 timeout. Jada Graves made the layup on a backdoor cut as time expired to cut the deficit to four points, 16-12.
Fatime Seck was the difference maker in the second quarter. The sophomore transfer went 4-of-5 from 3-point territory including three triples in a row to give NMJC a 28-24 advantage at the 2:51 mark. Seck finished with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Nuria Estrade's baseline jumper with 42 seconds left in the half put the T-Birds up 32-29 at the break.
The third quarter was a low scoring affair as NMJC held the Texans to 18.8% from the field to extend their lead to seven, 44-37.
The Thunderbirds shot 50% from the floor in the fourth quarter and limited the Texans to 27.8% from the field. Pania Davis finished with seven points in the quarter. The T-Birds went on to defeat South Plains by eight points, 61-53.
Pania Davis finished the night with 15 points and eight boards. Cacia Antonio registered 13 points and seven rebounds in the Thursday night win.
Guard Jada Graves recorded eight points and seven steals. Nuria Estrade added seven points.
The T-Birds are now in sole possession of first place in the WJCAC standings at 7-1 and control their own destiny for a chance at the WJCAC title.
The T-Birds shot 22-for-51 (43.1%) from the field, 5-of-15 (33.3%) from the 3-point line, and 12-of-18 (66.7%) from the free throw line. The Thunderbirds held the Texans to 29.9% from the field and 23.8% from the three-point line.
The No. 1 Thunderbirds move to 22-1 (7-1) and will face Western Texas College 5-16 (0-8) Monday, Feb. 10 at 5:45 p.m. CST in Snyder, Texas.
