T-Bird (WBB) Extends Win Streak to 8
NMJC women's basketball defeated Western Texas College by 22 points Monday night to earn their eighth straight win.
The T-Birds edged Western Texas in the first quarter 14-12 in a surprising start to the game given the Westerners winless record in conference.
The Westerners hung with NMJC in the second quarter and only trailed by 29-26 before Amyah Sutton knocked down a timely 3-pointer with two seconds left on the clock to make the advantage 32-26 at the break.
A Sutton triple with 5:42 to go in the third quarter gave NMJC a 45-29 lead. The T-Birds ended the period ahead of the Westerners 55-37. NMJC held the Westerners to 15.4% from the field and just two made baskets in the fourth quarter on their way to a 22-point win on the road.
Pania Davis ended the night with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Davis has now recorded nine double-doubles this season.
Cacia Antonio was solid on Monday finishing with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Amyah Sutton recorded 18 points and Fatime Seck registered five rebounds.
The T-Birds shot 18-for-55 (32.7%) from the field, 3-of-21 (14.3%) from the 3-point line, and 32-of-36 (88.9%) from the free throw line. The Thunderbirds forced 19 turnovers.
The T-Birds are in sole possession of first place in the WJCAC standings at 8-1 and control their destiny to secure a WJCAC title.
The No. 1 Thunderbirds move to 23-1 (8-1) and will face No. 16 Odessa College 16-6 (7-2) Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5:45 p.m. MST in Hobbs, NM.
