T-Bird (WBB) Defeats Laramie
No. 12 NMJC women's basketball defeated Laramie County CC 81-54 on Friday, Nov. 21.
NMJC was off to a slower than usual start trailing by five points early in the first quarter. They ended the quarter ahead 16-13. Madison Wilson and Luisa Amaral combined for 17 points in the second quarter. NMJC extended their lead after outscoring the Golden Eagles 27-15 in the second frame. The Thunderbirds went into the half ahead 43-28.
Jada Graves scored 11 of her 13 points in the third quarter with NMJC leading 59-40 headed into the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles didn't have much fight in the final quarter losing by 27 points to the T-Birds.
"We shot the ball better late in the game and played much better defensively in the second half and were able to get some stops," NMJC women's basketball head coach Austin Mefford said. "Madi was huge tonight she rebounded, was able to hit shots, and finish around the basket. She got a lot of hands on balls defensively and got some steals."
Starting guard Luisa Amaral recorded 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists in the win.
Madison Wilson came off the bench to lead the T-Birds in scoring with 17 points, four steals, and four rebounds. Indigo Bell was hot from beyond the arc shooting 4-of-5 to finish with a career-high 12 points. Kaycee Steinke registered nine points and five rebounds. The Thunderbird bench outscored Laramie 48-13 Friday night.
The T-Birds shot 32-for-69 (46.4%) from the field, 7-of-21 (33.3%) from the 3-point line, and 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the stripe. NMJC forced 20 turnovers and held the Golden Eagles to 28.4% from the field.
The Thunderbirds move to 6-1 on the year and will face Otero College in Hobbs, NM Saturday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. MST.
