No. 25 Clarendon Drops No. 8 T-Birds
The Thunderbirds dropped their second straight conference game 70-62 against Clarendon College on Thursday, Jan 15.
The T-Birds got off to a slow start in the first two quarters. Clarendon led 19-12 after the first quarter. Sophomore guard Jada Graves was held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time all season. The team shot 18.8% from the floor in the first quarter.
The second quarter was better for NMJC offensively, but Clarendon still outscored the T-Birds 21-16 to take a 40-28 lead at the break.
NMJC chipped the deficit down to eight points by the end of the third quarter, 49-41. The Thunderbirds could not gain any ground in the fourth quarter falling to the Bulldogs 70-62.
The loss is the first defeat to Clarendon since Feb. 26, 2015.
Jada Graves scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half. She also recorded six rebounds and five assists. Zarai Lewis ended the night with eight points and five rebounds. The trio of Madison Wilson, Azaleeah Olopau, and Kaycee Steinke all scored six points.
The Thunderbirds shot 20-for-63 (31.7%) from the field, 7-of-21 (33.3%) from the 3-point line, and 15-of-20 (75%) from the stripe. The T-Birds held the Bulldogs 38.2% from the field.
The No. 8 Thunderbirds slide to 14-3 (1-2) on the year and will face No. 1 South Plains College in Levelland, Texas Monday, Jan. 19 at 5:45 p.m. CST.
