Howard (WBB) Sweeps No. 8 T-Birds
The No. 8 Thunderbirds fell to Howard College 84-74 for the second time this season on Thursday, Feb. 12.
NMJC's road loss to Howard in January was also by 10 points.
Howard College came out firing in the first quarter. The Hawks hit eight 3-pointers and dropped 30 points in the quarter to NMJC's 14. The Hawks finished the half ahead 46-33. Howard led by 16 points, 63-47, at the 3:49 mark in the third quarter. NMJC closed the third on an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to single digits, 66-58.
Jada Graves brought the Thunderbirds within five, 70-65, with 7:20 remaining. Howard did not let Graves and company any closer the rest of the night and extended their lead to 10 points by the end of the game.
Sophomore guard Jada Graves finished with a team-high 23 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Azaleeah Oloapu registered a career-high 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Zarai Lewis scored all nine of her points from beyond the arc.
The T-Birds shot 29-for-78 (37.2%) from the field, 6-of-33 (18.2%) from the 3-point line, and 10-of-17 (58.8%) from the charity stripe. NMJC forced 21 turnovers and held the Hawks to 38.9% from the field but they gave up a season-high 15 3-pointers.
The T-Birds (6-3) are fourth in the WJCAC standings, trailing South Plains (7-3), Howard (8-1), and Clarendon 9-0.
The No. 8 Thunderbirds move to 19-4 (6-3) on the year and will face Clarendon College in Clarendon, Texas Monday, Feb. 16 at 5:45 p.m. CST.
