T-Bird (WBB) Trounces Shorthanded Frank
The No. 12 ranked Thunderbirds took down a very shorthanded Frank Phillips squad 85-54 on Thursday, Feb. 27.
The Plainsmen were down to just five active players prior to first tip.
The Thunderbirds never trailed on Thursday. NMJC was up double digits, 24-13, after one quarter of play. Luisa Amaral had a big second quarter notching eight points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the field as the T-Birds ended the first half with a 43-40 lead.
In the second half, the Thunderbirds led by as many as 35 points. The fourth quarter saw NMJC outscore Frank 26-11 in the period. The Plainsmen were unable to keep up with NMJC energy wise and flamed out by a score of 85-54.
Madison Wilson recorded a career high in points in back-to-back games after finishing with 21 points. Wilson ended the game going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Bright Eze grabbed 11 boards in the 31-point victory over the Plainsmen.
Freshman Luisa Amaral was in double figures for the second straight game with 13 points and six rebounds. Zarai Lewis registered 10 points and five assists.
Jada Graves finished with 10 assists and three steals on the night. Caitlin Wilson was a force down low podting nine points and four rebounds. Kaycee Steinke's 14-game 3-point streak came to a close after the sophomore couldn't hit from outside.
The T-Birds shot 34-for-72 (47.2%) from the field, 13-of-33 (39.4%) from the 3-point line, and 4-of-6 (66.7%) from the charity stripe. NMJC forced 16 turnovers and held the Plainsmen to 29.2% from the field.
The T-Birds (9-4) are third in the WJCAC standings trailing Howard (9-3), and Clarendon 12-0.
The No. 12 Thunderbirds move to 22-5 (9-4) on the year and will face Odessa College in the final game of the regular season in Hobbs, NM Thursday, March 5 at 5:45 p.m. MST. It is Sophomore Night so we will recognize the NMJC sophomores 10 minutes prior to tip.
