No. 5 Lady T-Birds set two school records at Masked Rider Open
NMJC's Shannon wins high jump, sets NMJC record
LUBBOCK, Texas — The fifth-ranked New Mexico Junior College women's indoor track and field team added seven new national qualifying marks, improved on five marks, set a pair of school records and had one event winner at the Texas Tech Masked Rider Open this weekend in Lubbock.
NMJC's Kelsey Shannon won the women's high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches. Shannon was the only competitor – regardless of division – to clear 5-9 1/4. The jump was a personal best, school record and ties her for first in the NJCAA.
The other NMJC record set this weekend came from the 4x800 relay team of Ja'lanna Williams, Quadaisha Newkirk, Jahneya Mitchell and Silvia Sosa as they ran a time of 9 minutes, 34.50 seconds. The time also ranks them No. 1 in the NJCAA.
Also setting national qualifying marks for NMJC was: Mayah Edwards (55m - 7.22), Marquetta Mapps (55 - 7.30, 200 - 25.48), Sosa (800 - 2:26.03), Purity Murray (5,000 - 18:57.72) and Newkirk (55 hurdles - 8.43)
NMJC athletes who improved their national qualifying marks: Newkirk (400 - 58.04), Mitchell (400 - 58.19), the 4x400 team of Mitchell, Newkirk, Garcia and Hoerr (3:50.7) and Micayla Collins (triple jump - 39-1).
NMJC competes at an event at the University of New Mexico on Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque.
