Lady T-Bird track qualifies 10 for nationals at UTEP
NMJC's Shannon ties school record in high jump, Clarke wins 200
EL PASO — The New Mexico Junior College women's track team opened its outdoor season with a strong performance at the UTEP Springtime Invitational on Saturday by qualifying in 10 events for the NJCAA nationals.
Highlighting the day for the Lady Thunderbirds was Kelsey Shannon, who tied a school record in the high jump, and Kayelle Clarke – who won the 200 meters at an event with NCAA Division I schools.
Shannon qualified for nationals by tying an NMJC high jump record of 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
As for Clarke, she qualified for nationals by winning the 200 with a time of 24.16 seconds.
Also qualifying for nationals for NMJC was: Mayah Edwards (100 - 11.80), Ja'Ianna Williams (800 - 2:19.52), Silvia Sosa (1,500 - 4:56.56), Naomi Tanui (1,500 - 5:00.99), Cheyenne Hoerr (400 hurdles - 1:02.84), Quadaisha Newkirk (400 hurdles - 1:03.94), Micayla Collins (long jump - 18-4 1/4), Gleneve Grange (discus - 164-5, javelin - 124-8) and the 4x100 relay team of Mapps, Edwards, Garcia and Clarke (46.77).
The Lady T-Birds next compete at the Texas Relays from Thursday through Saturday in Austin, Texas.
