Shannon wins high jump at Tech Open, Grange sets record
Lady T-Birds add four national qualifiers
LUBBOCK, Texas — The New Mexico Junior College women's track and field team once again had a successful weekend – this time at the Texas Tech Open on Friday and Saturday where the Lady Thunderbirds qualified four more for nationals, improved three national qualifying times, won an event and set a new school record.
NMJC's Kelsey Shannon took first place at the Texas Tech Open in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 7 1/4 inches while Gleneve Grange not only qualified for nationals in the hammer throw, but also set a school record with a toss of 144-9.
Also setting new national qualifying marks for NMJC was Jahneya Mitchell in the 400-meter run (55.78 seconds), Purity Murray in the 10,000 (38:57.66) and Naomi Tanui in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:19.77).
Ja'Ianna Williams (800 - 2:19.21), Cheyenne Hoerr (400 hurdles - 1:00.91) and Micayla Collins (long jump - 18-7 1/4) improved their national qualifying marks for the Lady Thunderbirds.
NMJC next competes at the West Texas A&M Classic starting Friday.
