Lady T-Birds take program-best 3rd at NJCAAs
NMJC's Clarke, Grange win individual national titles
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The New Mexico Junior College women's track and field team had its best showing at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in program history by finishing third Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
The Lady Thunderbirds finished behind only national champion South Plains and national runner-up Iowa Central as NMJC will be bringing home its first hardware from an outdoor national meet. For complete results, click here.
The Lady T-Birds officially have the fastest woman in junior college track as Kayelle Clarke won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.68 seconds. She also took third in the 200 with a time of 24.30.
Gleneve Grange won a national championship in the discus with a toss of 176 feet, 8 inches. The Georgia-signee also took third in the shot put (47-6.50).
In the high jump, NMJC's Kesley Shannon took second with a height of 5-7.
In the 400 hurdles, Cheyenne Hoerr took third (1:00.79) while Quadaisha Newkirk finished in eighth (1:06.12).
NMJC's Micayla Collins took fourth in the triple jump (40-0) as did Jahneya Mitchell in the 400 (55.02), Ja'Ianna Williams in the 800 (2:15.21) and Naomi Tanui in the 5,000 (18:27.41).
In the 3,000 steeplechase, Purity Murray took fifth (11:51.01) while Naomi took sixth (11:57.60).
In the heptathlon, NMJC's Jourdan Doffeny took sixth with 4,438 points. Also taking sixth was Murray in the 10,000 (40:35.69).
In the relays for NMJC, the 4x100 team (Garcia, Edward, Mapps and Clarke) took second (46.06), the 4x400 team took second (3:44.11) and the 4x800 team (Williams, Newkirk, Tanui and Hoerr) took fifth (9:32.17).
