The Thunderbirds played their first home match of the season Friday in the NMJC Classic. The T-Birds finished the day at 2-0 with a 3-0 win versus Trinidad State College and a 3-1 win against Tyler Junior College.
The morning matchup was relatively easy for the T-Birds. NMJC won over Trinidad State in three sets (25-17, 25-9, 25-16).
Iva Popovic made easy work of the Trojans tallying 11 kills in the win. Middle blocker Olivia Swipiarski had a perfect kill percentage with six kills, while Gaby Arias posted five kills in the morning match.
Middle blocker Karielys Maldonado matched her career-high in service aces with five. Lacie Schooley chipped in 20 assists and 10 digs for the T-Birds. Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Machado totaled 21 digs for the match.
In match two, NMJC faced more of a challenge from Tyler Junior College. The Thunderbirds started off on the wrong foot losing the first set 20-25, before rallying in the next three sets to vanquish any hope of a comeback from the Apaches. NMJC ultimately won the match in four sets (20-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-17).
Setter Lacie Schooley led the T-Birds Friday with 35 assists and 14 digs. Outside hitter Maggie Machado had one of her best all-around performances with 18 digs, nine kills, and four service aces.
Libero Luiza Arsufi added 22 digs and Iva Popovic recorded 14 kills in the win over the Apaches. The Thunderbirds move to 10-4 on the season.
NMJC will face off in day two of the NMJC Classic Saturday, Sept. 10 against Otero College at 11 a.m. and Blinn College at 3 p.m.
