No. 19 New Mexico Junior College won a five-set thriller against No. 12 New Mexico Military Institute (25-23, 25-22, 14-25, 15-25, 16-14). The T-Birds have now won five straight matches dating back to Sept. 24.
The Thunderbirds trailed the Broncos 7-3 and 11-9 in the fifth set. NMJC was able to mount a comeback and win 16-14 in an emotional victory for the T-Birds.
Sophomore Milena Cernjanski, who has taken over the libero position for the last three matches, set a school record with 38 digs on the night.
Freshman outside hitter Iva Popovic carried the Thunderbirds offense recording a double-double with 19 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore Maggie Machado also posted a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs. Freshman outside hitter Gaby Arias rounded out the three-pronged attack with 11 kills.
NMJC sophomore setter Lacie Schooley added 43 assists in the five-set win Saturday afternoon.
The T-Birds are 6-2 in conference (18-6) and in a tie with Midland College for second place, one game behind 7-1 Odessa College.
The Thunderbirds will play at Midland College on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. CDT.
NMJC moved to No. 16 in the NJCAA DI Volleyball Poll following the win over NMMI. The No. 16 ranking is the highest in school history.
